San Roque is a very attractive tourist destination, not only for tourists or visitors, but also for film makers and television production companies. For years the borough of San Roque has been the location for filming numerous international and Spanish movies. In addition, multiple television programmes have been shot on location, both international and national TV channels.
As far as movies are concerned, the British-produced film 'The Running Man' was shot on location here in 1962, directed by Carol Reed (who won an Oscar for the musical 'Oliver!' and starring the British actor Lawrence Harvey (nominated for an Oscar) and the American actress Lee Remick (also nominated for an Oscar). Since then numerous movies have been shot on location. The last movie to be filmed in Sotogrande, Sotogrande Port, Alcaidesa, other parts of the municipality of San Roque and the Gibraltar Area in 2014 was "El Niño", a blockbuster Spanish film, directed by Daniel Monzón (who won the Goya award for the movie Cell 211 ("Celda 211") and starring Luis Tosar and Jesus Castro.
With regards to television, different types of programmes have been filmed by TVE, Canal Sur, ZDF (Germany), Channel Four (UK), ITV (UK), RAI (Italy) or Tele2 (Norway). In the last few years several TV series have been filmed such as "Best av de Beste", a Norwegian sport contest reality show or an episode of the popular British programme 'A Place in the Sun', both are shown on prime time television on their respective national television channels.
