Business And Shopping

Business And Shopping

COMERCIALLY-DIVERSE BOROUGH “CONVENIENCE SHOPPING” Each of the four San Roque districts include excellent commercial amenities, although it is easy to highlight the ones with the highest proportion of businesses, which are a stone throw away for locals, tourists and visitors.

SAN ROQUE CITY CENTRE

Nowadays San Roque City Centre features various shopping streets, where the majority of local commerce is situated. Above all, the pedestrianised thoroughfare nicknamed “Malaga Street” (the streets real names are General Lacy and Coronel Moscoso). Nevertheless, there are also businesses in the following streets: San Felipe, Batallón Cazadores de Tarifa, Mercedes Huertas, Alameda Alfonso XI, Nueva, El Ejido Alto, Poeta Antonio Machado and Poeta Miguel Hernández (the last two in the Los Olivillos Housing Estate).

The establishments in the city are typically small family-run businesses such as tapa bars, cafés, boutiques, supermarkets, banks, rustic furniture shops, estate agencies, travel agencies, hairdresser’s, opticians, book shops, computer shops, shoe shops, etc.

San Roque City Centre also includes the “Diego Ponce” Indoor Market with all sorts of stalls like greengrocers, fishmongers, butchers, etc. Apart from these facilities, you can also make the most of two superstores, “Agrojardín” Garden Centre and “Mercadona” supermarket featuring ample car parks.

In addition to these businesses, “El Ejido“ Fairground area is where the popular Sunday street market is held. The market’s bargains buys attract thousands of people from the Gibraltar Area, as well as Gibraltarians and other visitors every Sunday morning.

THE VALLEY OF GUADIARO DISTRICT

Sotogrande Port offers visitors a series of businesses in which restaurants, bars, banks, yacht sales and rental firms, real estate agencies, home décor shops and designer boutiques stand out the most. The port boasts a quiet, modern atmosphere, being far less crowded than other marinas on the Coast.

The village of Pueblo Nuevo de Guadiaro is undoubtedly one of the main areas for commercial development and has the highest proportion of shops in comparison with other parts of the municipality.  Sierra Bermeja Street and the surrounding streets (Dorada, Blanca, Altamira, etc.) offer all kinas of businesses: restaurants, bars, mini markets, estate agencies, photo shops, travel agencies, car garages, etc., etc.

Pueblo Nuevo has become the main shopping area for small businesses in its own right in the Sotogrande area and its surroundings. Most of the shops offer tailor-made goods and services which are primarily what thousands of people who live or own holiday homes in this part of the San Roque Area need.

Guadiaro also seems to be developing as one of the main gastronomic and commercial areas in the Borough of San Roque due to the proximity of Sotogrande. The village features age-old family businesses in Calle Carretera and Francisco Amado, as well as new establishments which include several restaurants with international and traditional Andalusian cuisine.

Torreguadiaro has always been well-known for its bars and restaurants with magnificent sea views. Nevertheless, in the last few years, a fairly large amount of new businesses have opened, such as several estate agencies, car hire agencies, etc. Without a doubt, this village is a major tourist and commercial zone with its Main Avenue and “La Laguna” promenade.

Due to the A-7 dual carriageway and AP-7 toll motorway by-passing the village, as well as the pedestrian crossings on the old main road, the village has become a lot quieter and safer for pedestrians. Luckily, the thoroughfare is no longer as dangerous as it was a few years back before the by-pass was built.

Due to all these factors, Torreguadiaro is becoming one of the most important development areas in the last couple of years, with a strong emphasis on tourism.

The village of San Enrique still preserves a rural atmosphere, where polo and agriculture play very important roles. Part of the charm of this village is that it features roadside bars and restaurants on the route towards Tesorillo and Jimena, surrounded by groves of citrus trees.

The Sotogrande Costa Residential Area is where Galerías Paniagua and Plaza Blanca are located. Both shopping arcades feature marked traditional Andalusian architectural styles. The two adjacent arcades offer numerous businesses such as bars, restaurants, estate agencies, photo shops, chemist’s, etc.

After the Supercor supermarket opened in Sotogrande Costa, the inhabitants in the Sotogrande area have another shopping area available which has been enhanced the local facilities even more, with the Sotomarket (next to Supercor), Sotovila and San Roque Golf Resort shopping precincts.

We must not forget that the population of San Roque is almost twice its normal figure during the summer months with around 40,000 inhabitants. Obviously, visitors and tourists require the best facilities available to do their shopping.

THE INLAND DISTRICT

Estación de San Roque and Taraguilla-Miraflores share the same main thoroughfare, Guadarranque Avenue. This crucial main road features one of the highest proportions of furniture manufacturers and furniture shops in the whole of the region with a wide selection of products to cater for all kinds of tastes and prices.

Apart from these businesses, the two villages also boast one of the main culinary areas with restaurants, bars and roadside inns in the borough. If we consider it is on the gateway to the Alcornocales Nature Park, this will not surprise anyone.

THE BAY DISTRICT

Campamento is one of the most dynamically-commercial areas, which is located on one of the area’s busiest roads, the CA-34 main road linking San Roque to Gibraltar via La Linea.

It is not surprising that there are so many bars and restaurants along Calle Real, the village’s main street. Campamento’s strategic location has turned into one of the Gibtraltar Area’s most well-known gastronomic zones.

Lastly, the “MaxiDía” supermarket is also worth mentioning, this store has given local people another option for low-price food products and has a spacious car park available for clients.

Puente Mayorga

This village is teeming with people during the summer who own holiday homes, as well as residents’ friends and relatives who spend their summer holidays here.

In addition, hundreds of people flock to the village to spend the day at the local beach. That is why there are a large number of bars in the village that are generally quite crowded throughout the year.
